The European climate problem: why your barrier struggles from October
Dry indoor heating, low humidity and short daylight hours change what your skin needs. A seasonal framework for continental and northern Europe.
Skin does not respond to the calendar; it responds to water. Once outdoor humidity falls and indoor heating switches on, the gradient between your skin and the air steepens, and transepidermal water loss accelerates. In much of northern and central Europe that shift lands somewhere in October and holds until March.
The instinct is to add more actives. Usually the correct move is the opposite: protect the lipid barrier first, then reintroduce actives at a lower cadence. Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids in physiological ratios do more for winter comfort than another exfoliating acid.
Sun protection remains non-negotiable, and this is where European habits lag. UVA levels are meaningfully present through overcast winters, and UVA is the wavelength most implicated in photoageing. A daily SPF is a longevity decision, not a summer one.
A workable winter framework: cleanse with something non-stripping, hydrate onto damp skin, seal with a richer occlusive at night, and reduce retinoid frequency for two weeks before increasing it again. Consistency beats intensity.
